Project

Anti-Germ Handrail

Software

Regularly people are used to benefit from subways in order to commute through cities. The handrails in the train wagons are highly likely to privide a source of infection for their users, as plentSubways are an essential part of daily commuting, but the handrails in train cars are frequently touched by many passengers, making them a potential source of infection. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the risks of such high-contact surfaces. This project introduces a self-disinfecting handrail, designed to rapidly eliminate bacteria and viruses while remaining completely safe for users, helping to reduce the spread of infections in public transportation.y of people touch them. So this self-disinfecting handrail is designed, in order to eradicate all the bacteria and viruses without threatening user’s health and in a very short time.

Problem

  • Subway handrails are touched by hundreds of passengers daily, making them a major source of infection.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the risks associated with high-contact surfaces.

Solution

  • Ultraviolet (UV) light is a proven antimicrobial method, effective against various airborne viruses, but conventional germicidal UV lamps cannot be used in occupied spaces due to the risk of skin and eye damage.

  • Far-UVC light (207–222 nm) is equally effective at killing microorganisms and does not cause the health issuesassociated with conventional UV lamps.

  • This makes Far-UVC safe for continuous disinfection in occupied public spaces, such as subway handrails.
